How Do I Fix Something My Employee Damaged?

Just like with housecleaning, there are times when it makes sense to hire the professionals. While it may be tempting to try to fix damage claims yourself, you always run the risk of making the problem worse, upsetting the customer further and eventually costing your business even more time and money.

When fixing claims an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of last minute trying to find the right contractor. Establish relationships with a local contractor, plumber, electrician, furniture refinisher, carpet cleaner, etc. now and offer to send them referrals from your customer base in repayment for best repair pricing. Always use a contractor you have a relationship with, not your customer’s contractor (as they will lean toward the most expensive repair solution). More often than not, most damage we cause can be repaired through spot treatments, refinishing of a surface and other small fixes, rather than fully replacing a damaged item.

For truly minor scratches to surfaces like wood furniture, plastic and stainless steel, there are some DIY repair tricks you can try, but they should be done with extreme caution by a manager or owner only and with the full knowledge that any DIY repair runs the risk of making things worse. Meguiar’s Scratch X is a polishing compound designed for car finishes, but has successfully removes small scratches from stainless steel, plastic microwaves, and more at many a MaidPro. Howard Restore-A-Finish is a mixture of stain, light polymers, and oils that removes minor scratches and water rings on wood without damaging the underlying finish. For both products, always test in an inconspicuous area and rub with the grain of the item you are polishing.
